Prandtl probe is one of the most frequently used instruments for velocity, and also flow rate measuring.
It is based on measuring pressure difference between total pressure and static pressure of fluid in
a particular point of fluid field.
When velocity of fluid is brought to zero isenthropiclly, total pressure
can be measured. At the other hand, pressure that is measured in a point where velocity is not changed
in magnitude or in its direction is called static pressure.
The difference between total and static pressure is called dynamic pressure from which velocity can be
calculated using this calculator.
Also, you can use this calculator for Pitot tube as well. Pitot tube is used for measuring
of total pressure only. Static pressure has to be measured by some other instrument. Then the difference
in pressures (total and static) is giving the dynamic pressure, which is used to calculate the velocity.
Prandtl probe is used for flow velocity measuring in fluid field. With Prandtl probe
actually total and dynamic pressure are measured. Velocity is calculated from dynamic pressure
which is difference between total and static pressure.
Prandtl probe free calculator can be used for both liquids and ideal gases as flowing fluid.
When ideal gas is considered for low Mach numbers the flow can be observed as incompressible.
For higher Mach numbers the flow must be considered as compressible and if Mach number M > 1,
normal shock wave will occur and different equation is used.
