Reynolds number calculation - theory

Reynolds number - Re - can be calculated as follows:

where is:

  • V - velocity
  • D - pipe diameter
  • ni - kinematic viscosity view table

This equation means that Re number is showing relation between inertia forces and viscosity forces. That means that if Re number is high, inertia forces are superior than viscosity forces and the flow is turbulent and if Re number is low, viscosity forces are superior and the flow is laminar. If Reynolds number is lower than 2320 it means that flow is laminar, or if Reynolds number is higher than 2320 the flow is turbulent.

As this calculator enables you to enter some other values instead of three that are necessary, several other equations have been used:

where is:

  • Q - volumetric flow rate
  • G - mass flow rate
  • rho - density view table
  • mi - dynamic viscosity view table

If the flowing fluid is ideal gas and the value for T - temperature is known but value for rho - density isn't, than equation of state for ideal gas is used for rho calculation (if it is necessary):

where is:

  • p - pressure
  • T - temperature
  • R - gas constant view table
